Wolverines ride fast start past Santa Rosa

May 1—TEXICO — Junior Cade Collins scored a personal-best 18 points and sophomore Jahvon Askew added 14 as Texico's boys blew out to a 19-point halftime advantage en route to a 52-39 District 6-2A home win over Santa Rosa on Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (7-3, 4-1 district) scored just 16 halftime points, but it didn't matter as the Lions (7-4, 1-4) were unable to make significant inroads.

Junior Jarron Sanchez was the top scorer for the Lions with 12 points.

Meantime, the Texico-Santa Rosa girls game, scheduled for Santa Rosa, was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Lady Lions' program.

In other boys games on Tuesday:

Melrose 71, Clovis Christian 48 — Senior Tate Sorgen continued his recent scoring surge with 27 points as the Buffaloes (9-0, 7-0 District 6-1A) dominated the visiting Eagles. Tuesday's output gave Sorgen 81 points over a three-game span.

Senior Trace Jackson added 12 points for Melrose, while CCS (7-3, 4-3) was paced by seniors Tyler Lingnau with 12 points and Dawson Teune with 11.

Elida 69, Floyd 42 — The District 4-1A champion Tigers roared to a 19-5 first-quarter lead at Floyd en route to their ninth consecutive victory.

Junior Rylan Creighton posted a season-high 29 points for Elida (10-1, 7-0), followed by sophomore Jose Jimenez with 12 and junior Aiden Yates with 10. For the Broncos (4-4, 4-4), playing their season finale, cousins Eli and Eric Terry collected 16 and nine points, respectively.

Fort Sumner 88, Grady 40 — The Foxes rolled up 56 first-half points — including 36 in the second quarter — en route to a District 6-1A home triumph over the Bronchos.

Sophomore Clay Norman led four Fort Sumner players in double digits with 22 points, while freshman Cash Burney netted 18, senior Jayden Cline 14 and junior Creed West 11. The leading scorer for the Bronchos (2-8, 1-7) was senior Isaiah Mitchell with 15.

On the girls' side Tuesday:

Fort Sumner 53, Grady 38 — The Lady Bronchos led 11-10 after one quarter and generally competed well against the District 6-1A-leading Vixens (9-0, 7-0).

Sophomore Avery Cavett led all scorers with 17 points for Fort Sumner, while senior Keeli West chipped in 15. For the Lady Bronchos (4-6, 2-6), senior Krissy Grau finished with nine points and freshman Shayla White added seven.

Melrose 60, Clovis Christian 33 — The Lady Buffs dominated the middle two quarters, outscoring CCS 30-6 over that stretch, to break open a three-point lead.

Senior Hailey Martin led Melrose (8-1, 6-1 District 6-1A) with 15 points, followed by senior Anjalina Sanchez with 13 and sophomore Isabelle Sena with 10. Senior Lola De Groot topped the Lady Eagles (5-5, 3-5) with 14 points.
