Muriel, 107, Says Secret Of Her Long Life Was Giving Up Cigarettes At 102

A great-great grandmother from London celebrated her 107th birthday this week and put it down to giving up her 40-a-day cigarette habit just five years ago.

Muriel Froomberg smoked her last aged 102, saying she gave up so she could “live a long life” and watch her all of her grandchildren grow up.

She started smoking when she was just 16 and got through two packets a day for almost 90 years.

But she has not completely decided to opt for a healthy lifestyle as Muriel still gets through a bottle of whisky a week.

She has also kept 800 cigarettes in a cabinet in her Willesden home and when asked why she did not throw them away, she replied: “You never know when I might need them.“

She celebrated her birthday in fine style with lunch at the Ritz, following a trip to the hairdresser and a manicure.

She was born in 1909, the same year as people such as actor Errol Flynn and legendary Manchester United boss, Matt Busby.

Muriel has three children, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and even three great-great grandchildren and is known by her family as “Mumu”.

“My birthday was lovely, especially as I have a rather big family,” she said.

She also received her eighth birthday card from the Queen for her latest birthday.

"She looks like a very nice person,” said Muriel.
