Woman, 21, hit by car while trying to cross Route 72 in Stafford

STAFFORD - A 21-year-old Oakland woman suffered severe injuries after she was struck by a car while she and her friends were trying to cross Route 72 early Labor Day morning, police said.

Alexa Paradiso and a group of friends were trying to cross the roadway near Marsha Drive, to enter Beach Haven West, when Paradiso was struck by a Honda CRV being driven east in the right lane of Route 72 by Kathryn Loftus, 27, of Harvey Cedars, police said. The accident happened about 12:48 a.m.

Paradiso suffered extensive head and external and internal injuries, and was flown by medical helicopter to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, police said.

Stafford Township first aid volunteers assisted at the scene.

Eastbound Route 72 was completely closed for approximately 90 minutes, and traffic was diverted through Beach Haven West, police said.

This accident is currently under investigation by the police department's Traffic Safety Bureau, and no charges have been filed against Loftus as a result of this investigation, police said.
