Woman, 30, dies in apparent suicide at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility

A 30-year-old woman who was a prisoner at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility died late Friday of an apparent suicide, a Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman confirmed.

Shikisha Monet Tidmore died at a local hospital near the prison in Ypsilanti Township, with members of her family at her bedside, department spokesman Chris Gautz said.

An officer who was doing rounds found Tidmore hanging in her cell on Thursday afternoon, Gautz said.

The Michigan State Police is investigating and the department is conducting an internal investigation, Gautz said.

Tidmore was alone in a temporary segregation cell after she was involved in a prison assault, Gautz said. After she was discovered, staff began efforts to resuscitate her before she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, he said.

Tidmore "had met with mental health staff that day and administrative staff met with her later in the day and there were no issues," Gautz said.

Attempts to reach a relative of Tidmore were unsuccessful Tuesday.

There were 11 prison suicides statewide in 2021, one of them at Women's Huron Valley.

Before that 2021 incident, in which Natasha Roark, 39, was found hanging in a prison shower, there had not been a suicide at the women's prison for nearly six years.
