The Mansfield Fire Department is investigating a fatal fire early Monday morning at 612 Johns Ave.

Ninah Stieber, 61, died at the scene, according to Richland County Coroner's Investigator Tom Stortz. Three others in the house were able to escape without injury, Mansfield fire Capt. Dan Crow said Monday morning.

Crow said the initial fire call came in at 2:33 a.m. Monday and reported a person trapped in the house.

He said Engine 6 from the Springmill Street station was first on the scene and saw heavy fire at the rear of the structure and on the first floor. The crew from Rescue 1 found the victim on the stairwell to the second floor, Crow said.

The two-story, single dwelling house suffered heavy damage, Crow said. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.

Crow said the fire remains under investigation.
