Woman arrested at elementary school choir program in Valparaiso

A woman was taken into custody at a Valparaiso elementary school Thursday night after arriving for a school choir program intoxicated, inappropriately touching a man seated in front of her and going into the boys bathroom, according to a report from the Valparaiso Police Department.

Jennifer Ryan, 36, with addresses in Valparaiso and Hebron, was charged Friday with a misdemeanor count of public intoxication, according to online court records. She was released on $300 cash bond.

At 7:02 p.m. Thursday, police were called to Flint Lake Elementary School, 4106 Calumet Ave., for a report of an intoxicated woman yelling at kids, police said.

Witnesses told police that Ryan, reportedly at the school to watch a relative in the choir concert, inappropriately began rubbing the back of a man seated in front of her in the school gym; yelled at a child in the boys bathroom; and attempted to get into a car that wasn’t hers in the parking lot, among other actions.

Results of a blood draw showed Ryan had a blood alcohol content of .405, more than five times Indiana’s legal limit of .08, and she tested positive for cannabinoids in another screening, police said.

Police transported Ryan to Porter County Jail.
