FRANK VASCELLARO: A Woodbury mother is in custody as two of her children are recovering from injuries in the hospital. David Schuman spoke to neighbors who stepped in to help when they saw the woman chasing her son in the street.

- Muna Abdi is a mother. And when she saw and heard a little boy in distress on her small street in Woodbury, she acted.

MUNA ABDI: There was a child around six years old, running, and his mother was after him.

- My daughter, she said, mommy, I hear screaming from neighbor.

- Muna and a couple other neighbors say they blocked the woman from reaching her son, protecting him early Wednesday morning.

- We stopped her, you know? We told her to calm down, and you know, she just stand up. She's staring at us, and then she just go back to the house.

- Police arrived to find two children, the six-year-old and a younger one, who was unresponsive in the street and is now thought to be in critical condition. Officers took the mother into custody.

Neighbors say the older child, a boy, had bruising on his head and a possible broken wrist or hand. They tell me the younger child who was unresponsive is a girl.

- I was scared too. I couldn't go in my house. I just ran to the street to see the police come in, so I was terrified.

- The women don't know much about the mother or her family. They say she's never shown much interest in being a part of their neighborhood social group. One woman did say she called police earlier this year on the mother for harassment, like persistently knocking on her door, sometimes, for hours.

- You've reported her before?

- Yes, the police. Three days straight, she hit my door.

- In Woodbury, David Schuman, WCCO 4 News.

- We're told several neighbors called 911, and investigators tell us, the operators could hear yelling and screaming in the background. As of right now, the mother has not been charged with a crime.
