The party planning mastermind behind Kim Kardashian's extravagant Christmas parties and, most recently, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin's wedding, has some tricks up her sleeve when it comes to hosting the ultimate holiday party. Mindy Weiss of Mindy Weiss Party Consultants spoke to House Beautiful about her party must-haves, as well as her secret weapon to creating a gorgeous decor wall (hint: it's easier than you'd think).

Of course, Weiss knows the average party planner doesn't exactly have a Kardashian budget—I mean, not every Christmas party in Calabasas can have snow—which is why she has low-cost solutions to create the ultimate party atmosphere right in your own home. After all, Weiss says celebs make their own party planning Pinterest boards, just like us!

Choose jewel tones.

"You're looking at deep orange, deep burgundy," Weiss says of this season's hottest color trend. "If you look at all the fall leaf colors, that's what [celebrities] are using for Halloween, for Thanksgiving, and for Christmas [parties]."

Start the party vibe before anyone walks in.

"Another thing that I'm realizing is everyone wants their decor to start outside," the party planner explains. "I'm doing a lot of things around the arch of a door." Possibly one of the most extravagant displays of outdoor holiday party decor was when Weiss worked on Kim Kardashian's 2018 Christmas Eve party—which included a sparkling Instagram-worthy tunnel and a hill covered in snow for some nighttime sledding.

Decorate your bar—and make sure it's fully stocked.

"In any party situation from my weddings to holiday, there's such emphasis on the bar," Weiss says. Don't just leave it bare, either—you can drape faux cobwebs over your home bar for Halloween and fun, flashy tinsel for Christmas or Hanukkah parties. If you don't have a bar in your home, Weiss has another hack for you to follow.

"A lot of times I'll take, believe it or not, a sink—some of my clients have more than one sink—and we fill it up with crushed ice and we make a prosecco bar," she revealed. "Right now, a big thing is craft beer, and we just make an area [for it]. We fill the sink and put all these drinks on ice for a self-serving bar."

Everybody wants twinkle lights.

"They want them on their fireplaces, on their walls, around pictures frames and shelving," Weiss says of her client's affinity with twinkle lights. "It's magical. It's easier to do now without damaging the walls." The party planner's secret hack? Command Adjustables—they'll make hanging anything on your walls super easy. And prevent you from putting holes in them, too.

Use what you already have.

Another tip? Weiss says use the things that have been going unused in your home—including your fancy dishes that were wedding gifts. "I literally take the dishes out of their cabinets and I pile them up," Weiss says. "Then I find a place for a great family-style buffet."

Weiss also encourages homeowners to use their influx of holiday cards because—true story!—people actually like looking at them. They're basically a free piece of decor that can take up a wall in your house.

Put empty cardboard boxes to good use.

"You have to layer things—that's how things become interesting," Weiss says of table displays. "I've actually taken shipping boxes, crates if they have them, and I cover them with fabric, and I'm able to make layers on their tables for a display."

Candles & scents are very important.

"People want to come in to a home that smells like the holidays, that smells like pine," Weiss says. "You have all of these great scent machines now that they sell everywhere." Weiss and her team are a huge fan of having candles all around—although that might get just a bit dangerous at a holiday party where the boozy eggnog is flowing. Fake candles with a scent diffuser are a great idea for the right atmosphere.
