Woman buys lottery ticket days after her birthday. The NC prize left her speechless
A North Carolina woman bought a lottery ticket days after her birthday — and it gave her another reason to celebrate.
Millicent Massey said she was speechless when she first discovered the ticket was worth $100,000.
“I was just like, ‘Oh my God,’” she told the N.C. Education Lottery. “That’s really all I could say.”
Massey, a Wake County resident, celebrated her birthday on Tuesday, June 21. That same week, officials said she tried her luck at a Food Lion grocery store in the town of Fuquay-Varina, southwest of Raleigh.
While at the supermarket’s Broad Street location, Massey spent $25 on a ticket for the Spectacular Riches game. She later found out the scratch-off won big, scoring her a belated gift, according to officials.
“My birthday was Tuesday so it can’t get any better than this,” Massey said in a news release.
Massey claimed her prize money on Friday, June 24. She kept $71,017 after taxes and plans to put the extra cash toward bills and savings, according to the N.C. Education Lottery.
It’s not the first time someone has gotten a windfall while turning another year older.
In May, officials said a South Carolina woman had a debt-free birthday after buying a lottery ticket that hit the jackpot.
Two months earlier, a North Carolina college student left her birthday celebration and bought herself a winning scratch-off ticket, McClatchy News reported.
