Woman causes fight on school bus between daughter and another student

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) — A Breaux Bridge Elementary student was in the hospital after an altercation in which a woman is accused of jumping on a school bus and inciting a fight between her daughter and the child.

11-year-old Destiny Thibeaux got on her school bus early Wednesday morning down Agnes Street. As the bus went to the next stop down the road, one of her classmates’ parents got on the bus with her daughter and started a fight between the two.

Destiny’s grandmother Latricia Potier said Destiny called her in the middle of the altercation.

“My grandbaby kept yelling, come see for me, come see for me. The mom and her daughter are on the bus fighting with me,” Potier explained.

Ashley Potier, Destiny’s mother, talked to her daughter about the incident. She says the mother who got on the bus was claiming her daughter was being bullied by Destiny which incited her to follow the bus when Destiny got on. When it stopped, she took action.

After the altercation, Destiny was taken to a nearby medical center to check on her injuries. The mother was taken to the police department for questioning. Potier tells says she still cannot believe something like this took place.

“I’m a mother. I’m going to correct my kids,” said Potier. “If she had any problem with my daughter, she could have come to me, and I would have corrected my daughter.”

Latricia Potier fears situations like this happen too often to have nothing be done about it.

“We see this every day. This is my concern. I don’t find none of the kids is safe on the busses. They’re not safe at school. What if this parent had a weapon,” said Potier.

Breaux Bridge Chief Albert LeBlanc says the woman was cited and charged with two misdemeanors of trespassing and inciting a fight between juveniles and released.
