Woman charged with murder in Albemarle County slaying

ALBEMARLE COUNTY — For the third time in just three days, another person in the region was shot and killed, this time in Albemarle County, police said Tuesday.

Units from the Albemarle County Police Department and Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2100 block of Stony Point Road on Tuesday.

Authorities arrived to find a deceased victim with a gunshot wound.

Shawna M.N. Murphy, 38, of Albemarle County, was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, a press release said.

Murphy is being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and to expect a heavy police presence for the remainder of the day at the scene of the killing. "Please avoid the area," the release said.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Tuesday's killing in Albemarle County comes just two days after a man was gunned down in Charlottesville. Police said at about 1 a.m. on Sunday in the 200 block of West Main Street, gunshots erupted inside an unnamed bar, with additional gunfire outside of the establishment. Devonn J. Wilson suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, a press release said. Two female bystanders were also wounded and hospitalized.

On Monday morning in Harrisonburg, a 38-year-old man was shot to death in the 200 block of Community Street in what police described as a "targeted act of violence."

Less than two weeks ago, a Waynesboro man was charged with attempted murder in a shooting on Village Drive, and on Oct. 16, eight people were shot and wounded in Harrisonburg.
