Woman who claimed Warriors trademark loses council race by 3 votes, will not seek recount

A candidate for Gettysburg Borough Council that attempted to get the school district to pay her a fee for use of their existing logo lost the race by three votes, according to election results reported by Adams County.

Kierstan Demps, 31, of Gettysburg, who was running for Gettysburg Borough's Ward 1 council seat under the name Kierstan Belle, lost to Peter Bales, according to the results.

Demps, the Democrat on the ballot, had 219 votes, and Bales, the Republican on the ballot, had 222 votes. In a statement she gave to the Gettysburg Times, Demps claims she will not seek a recount.

Demps came to widespread notoriety in early October of this year, when she claimed she had trademarked the Gettysburg Warriors name and logo under her LLC, Kierstan's Kids, LCC. On her application, she had said, is the logo for the Warriors: a capital G encompassed by an arrowhead.

At that time, Demps made unspecific claims that she was trying to get the school district to pay her a fee so that she could establish a childcare center.

The Gettysburg Area School District initially responded to Demps' claims in October by sending her a cease-and-desist letter, according to a Gettysburg Times report at the time.

On the day before the election, the school board passed a resolution that officially adopted the Warriors logo as their official emblem for both academics and athletics.

Demps, who had served as an alternate on the borough's planning commission, resigned from the planning commission during the Oct. 10 meeting of the Gettysburg Borough council.
