Woman in critical condition after being shot by police in Sellersburg

A Sellersburg woman is in critical condition at the University of Louisville Hospital after being shot by police during a standoff Wednesday night.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls said officers from the Sellersburg Police Department and Southwest Regional SWAT Team responded to a home in the 200 block of Liam Noble Circle just before 10 p.m. Wednesday when a neighbor reported shots had been fired.

When officers arrived, they heard gunshots at the home and requested assistance, Huls said. The woman was seen in the garage and on a back deck of the home with a handgun and appeared to be intoxicated, he said.

The woman, in her 50s, appeared to have fired between 10 and 12 rounds from the house, Huls said. Hostage negotiators were called to the scene, but the woman would not maintain contact with officials, he said. Officers observed the woman with a drone going back and forth between the home and deck with the gun.

Officers were reportedly able to get through the garage door and attempt to get into the home, but the woman was on the other side of the door and fired at officers. At least one member of the SWAT team then fired back, striking the woman, Huls said.

The woman was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital and she was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive, he said.
