RIGA TWP. — A young woman died and three other people suffered serious injuries in a crash Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened at about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Lipp Highway and East Horton Road, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police post in Monroe. From evidence at the scene and witness statements, troopers determined a Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound on East Horton Road and a Jeep Renegade was traveling southbound on Lipp Highway. The intersection is a two-way stop with traffic on East Horton Road having the right of way. The Renegade failed to stop at the signed intersection and proceeded into the path of the Suburban.
The 20-year-old woman driver of the Renegade was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The passenger of the Renegade, a 16-year-old girl, was transported by ambulance to ProMedica Toledo Hospital with serious injuries.
The two occupants of the Suburban, a 51-year-old man who was driving and a 55-year-old woman passenger, were also transported by ambulance to ProMedica Toledo Hospital with serious injuries.
Police did not release the names of the woman who died or the people who were injured.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash, the release said.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Blissfield Police Department, Riga Township Fire Department, and Madison Township Fire Department.
