Woman dies at Baltimore burn center after Bendersville fire

The victim of a weekend Bendersville house fire passed away at a burn center in Baltimore, according to officials.

Deborah Grauel, of Bendersville, passed away at the burn center of Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore, Maryland, after a house fire on Oct. 14.

The Office of the Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland, confirmed that they were handling the death investigation, due to Grauel passing in Baltimore.

Crews were called to the house fire in the 100 block of Kime Avenue in Bendersville around 4:04 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, according to Adams County 911 dispatch records.

Bendersville Fire Chief Jeff Kime arrived on the scene to find a female victim, later identified as Grauel, in cardiac arrest outside the home, and fire showing from the front and rear of the home, he said in an interview Monday.

The victim's son, who was in the garage of the home when the fire broke out, came outside and found her unconscious on the back deck, Kime said. He pulled her away from the home, where firefighters found her on their arrival.

On Monday, Kime said the victim, later identified as Grauel, was revived by police officers and firefighters on the scene, and she was transported to Gettysburg Hospital.

She was then was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore, a burn center.

During the fire, a firefighter also fell ill and was transported to Gettysburg Hospital for evaluation, Kime said. That firefighter was transferred to Hershey Hospital but was discharged Sunday night, he said.

With extensive damage from the fire, the house was a total loss, Kime said.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the fire, Kime said,
