Woman dies after car crashes into Ohio River as family was returning from football game

A woman is dead after crashing into the Ohio River in Clermont County on Sunday afternoon.

Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident as a crash.

Authorities say a Kentucky family was driving back from a football game, with some family members in one car following Christine Durham, of Petersburg, in another car ahead of them.

The cars were on Palestine Road in Pierce Township and were approaching US-52, where they were supposed to turn onto that road. Durham in front did not turn, instead crossing US-52 down 10 Mile Road toward Palestine Road. Durham then “went airborne into the Ohio River” as her loved ones watched from behind, according to OSP Sgt. Joshua Patrick.

“I would imagine they are going through a very hard time, as anyone would,” Patrick said of the victim’s family. “I would say, keep that family in your thoughts and prayers.”

A dive team was on-scene, and a multi-jurisdictional search of the river lasted hours.

Authorities said around 5:20 p.m. that the car had been located. OSP named Durham and confirmed her death at about 11 p.m.
