Woman dies after stepping into roadway, being struck by truck in DeFuniak Springs

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A 29-year-old woman was killed Saturday morning when she walked into the path of an oncoming truck.

Witnesses told DeFuniak police the woman had stepped into the path of the truck as it traveled west on U.S. Highway 90, according to a Police Department news release. The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m.

First responders with the Office of the City Marshal, DeFuniak Springs Police, DeFuniak Springs Fire Department. Walton County Sheriff's Office, and Walton Fire Rescue all responded to the scene, the news release said. The woman, however, succumbed to her injuries shortly after the accident.

An autopsy will be conducted.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this young woman's family and friends during this difficult time," DeFuniak Police Chief James Hurley said. "The investigation is ongoing at this time."
