Woman and dog cling to rock for 24 hours after their boat sinks, Alaska troopers say

A woman and her dog spent 24 hours clinging to a rock in the Pacific Ocean off Alaska after their boat sank, state troopers reported.

But a man with them has not been found after he vanished trying to swim to a nearby island, Alaska State Troopers said in a news release. He’s now presumed dead.

A boat with the two people and dog aboard ran aground near Point Baker on Prince of Wales Island at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, troopers said.

They climbed into a skiff and made it to the rock before the skiff and boat were both lost, the release said.

The man, 27-year-old Point Baker resident Arne Dahl, tried to swim to another island but vanished, troopers said.

A passing boat found the woman and dog clinging to the rock about 2:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, and rescued them. The woman declined medical care.

Troopers and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the area for Dahl for hours without success, the release said.
