Woman faces up to 30 years in prison for DUI accident that killed 10-year-old Peoria boy

PEORIA– A Peoria woman who was under the influence of cocaine and fled the scene of a fatal hit and run accident last year faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday.

Karrie L. Brunswig, 44, entered pleas to aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and two other drug counts. The plea agreement with Peoria County prosecutors had her plead to the several counts, which will run consecutive to each other. Without the plea, she would have faced more time had she been convicted at trial.

According to court records, Brunswig pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine in connection with a May 22, 2021, incident. She faces up to three years in prison on that charge as well as on another drug possession count. She faces up to 12 years in prison on the count of leaving the scene of an accident and up to 12 years on the aggravated DUI charge.

The latter requires her to serve at least 85% of whatever sentence Chief Peoria County Judge Katherine Gorman imposes on Sept. 29. The other charges are all day-for-day "good-time" eligible. Lesser counts of driving on a suspended license and having drug paraphernalia were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The fatal crash that killed 10-year-old Troy Erving occurred in the 1600 block of Northeast Glen Oak Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. Nov. 9, 2021. The boy was riding an electric bike when he was struck by Brunswig's pickup truck, prosecutors have said.
