Woman fighting for her life after barrage of daylight gunfire on Tallahassee's southside

A woman is fighting for her life after becoming the city's latest victim of gun violence.

At 2:30 p.m. Tallahassee Police Department officers responded after shots were fired outside the Leon Arms Apartments at 2502 Holton Street.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting occurred outside and that multiple rounds were fired," said Heather Merritt, a TPD spokesperson.

Merritt said someone drove the injured woman to Orange and Adams Street where they met emergency officials and she was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The circumstances of the shooting aren't clear and there are no immediate suspects at this time. After police swarmed the scene, detectives placed dozens of evidence markers around shell casings on the ground.

"It's a very active scene right now," Merritt said. "We have detectives there working to establish leads and speak to any potential witnesses."

Talethia Edwards, a mother of seven and a Bond community advocate, drove into the neighborhood to pray for the victim and those impacted.

"I see these cars and tape and kids are buying ice cream and there’s a shooting with an assault rifle on the other side of the building and just to see people going on with their lives." Edwards told the Democrat. "That’s the effect of trauma. We’re jaded. We’re not paused at all by this horrific incident."

The broad-daylight shooting is part of a summer spike in violence. Since June, the city has endured three separate double homicides and three murders in a single 24-hour span.

This year, 16 people have died – eleven of them since June – and at least 44 have been injured in 59 serious shootings in the capital city and county, according to a Tallahassee Democrat analysis of gun violence.

On Tuesday night, two 18-year-old men were killed in a shooting outside the Lawrence-Gregory Community Center on Dade Street. According to police both men were shot inside a car. One died at the scene, the other at a local hospital. No arrests have been made.

The first double homicide happened June 22 when a disagreement in the McDonald's parking lot between two teens and a young adult turned deadly as bullets began to fly. About a month later, two sisters were murdered outside their Mission Road home. Their killer ended his life on Facebook Live after leading police on a multiple county chase.
