Woman found on Nettles Island beach likely died by self-inflicted gunshot

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A woman found on the beach Sunday afternoon appears to have died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Sheriff Ken Mascara said Monday.

Where? Detectives went to the 9900 block of South Ocean Drive after a person called 911 about 5 p.m. to report an “unresponsive” woman on the beach, Mascara said via text.

What happened? “The 42-year-old female has been identified and her family members have been notified,” Mascara said. “It appears her death was a result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.”

The 9900 block of South Ocean Drive is in the area of Nettles Island in southern St. Lucie County.

Official cause: Investigators are waiting on an autopsy for a conclusion regarding the cause of death.
