Woman hospitalized after being stabbed four times in Staunton

STAUNTON — A woman was hospitalized after being stabbed four times Sunday night, according to the Staunton Police Department.

Police said the suspect, who was apprehended, was also reportedly involved in another assault prior to the stabbing.

Both were domestic-related incidents.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., officers were called to a residence on East Gay Street in Staunton. The victim, a 30-year-old Raphine woman, was reportedly assaulted before being stabbed in the chest, abdomen, arm and shoulder, a report said.

The victim was taken to Augusta Health in Fishersville with serious injuries and then transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

James B. Beverlin, 28, of Staunton, is charged with malicious wounding. Police said a kitchen knife was used in the attack. It was recovered at the scene.

About 20 minutes prior to the stabbing, Beverlin is accused of assaulting a 27-year-old woman at the same residence. Police said she was punched and pushed.

Police were speaking to the first victim at a nearby convenience store when the stabbing took place on East Gay Street. Authorities arrested Beverlin at the stabbing scene on East Gay Street.

Both victims were family members, the report said.

Beverlin, who also faces a misdemeanor charge of assault, is being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
