Woman impaled by stick after falling on NH mountain hike, prompting rescue

A Vermont woman suffered traumatic injuries while hiking on a Cheshire County mountain Thursday night.

23-year-old Candace Hadwen of Springfield was hiking Mt. Kilburn around 6:30 p.m. when she experienced a medical emergency and lost consciousness, according to New Hampshire Fish and Games Law Enforcement. Officials say Hadwen fell and was impaled by a stick, causing heavy bleeding. To make matters worse, Hadwen had fallen off the trail.

Multiple agencies immediately responded to the mountain. Personnel from the Walpole Fire Department were the first to find Hadwen, and administered life-saving measures to stop the bleeding, authorities say. Rescue crews were able to transport her off the mountain and into a waiting medical helicopter.

Hadwen was flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.
