Woman jumps in ocean to help teen. Then man dies trying to save them, officials say

A woman rushed to save a 17-year-old boy who was struggling in the water at a Rhode Island beach, officials said.

Then they both needed saving.

A 38-year-old man died after trying to help them at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, at the Scarborough North State Beach, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said in a news release.

The 21-year-old woman had gone to the beach with the boy and saw him struggling from the shoreline, officials said.

Once she got in the water, she also became in distress. The man then tried to rescue them, officials said.

Rescuers pulled the three out of the water and took them to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, officials said.

Officials have not yet released the man’s name.

Scarborough North State Beach is about 35 miles south of Providence.
