A woman was killed and five others injured including two children during a four-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, authorities said.

A dark-colored BMW and a gray sedan were eastbound on Franklin Boulevard at high speeds when the BMW crashed into the driver’s side of an SUV that was southbound on Homan Avenue about 2 p.m., according to the Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit. A Chevy van was also struck as a result of the collision, police said.

The sedan drove away from the scene, and the occupants of the black BMW fled on foot. Police later put out a community alert to help locate the sedan, but it was unknown how the car was involved in the crash, police said Friday.

The driver of the SUV, a woman of an unknown age, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police. Her name was not being made public immediately.

A man and two children were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, and two other adults were taken in good condition to Stroger, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt, who did not know which vehicles they were riding in.

The Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
