PORTSMOUTH — A car passenger died Wednesday morning on Interstate 95 near the Portsmouth-Greenland line in a rollover crash that caused her to be ejected from a vehicle.

A 65-year-old woman from Buena Park, California was the victim of the fatal crash, according to New Hampshire State Police. The deadly incident occurred just south of Exit 3B during the morning commute Tuesday, prior 8 a.m.

Responding state troopers located a 2019 Genesis G70 flipped over onto its roof just prior to 8 a.m. Wednesday after the northbound vehicle lost control and drove over the paved portion of the roadway, police said.

“The car continued into the grassy center median, before turning and hitting a large light pole,” state police noted in a news release.

The car ended up in the high-speed breakdown lane in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, state police added. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Saugus, Massachusetts, was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the deceased woman and the driver of the car were not immediately released.

All lanes reopened and the scene was cleared by 12:05 p.m., according to New Hampshire State Police spokesperson Amber Lagace.

Traffic in the southbound lane was backed up to Exit 5 for a while as emergency crews tended to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by New Hampshire State Police.

Two southbound lanes on Interstate 95 were closed for about three hours as investigators worked, snarling traffic.

New Hampshire State Police Troop A was assisted on scene by the agency’s Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Unit, police and fire personnel from Greenland, the Portsmouth Fire Department, the North Hampton Fire Department, the New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner’s office, the state Department of Transportation and National Wrecker Service.
