WTNH News 8 and the Associated Press are reporting that Gov. Ned Lamont may seek to have his emergency powers extended, but they say "under narrow circumstances." His emergency powers are set to expire on Feb. 15.

An extension may include topics such as the school mask mandate and remote learning, according to WTNH News 8 and the AP. GOP leaders say after nearly two years of emergency powers it's time to let the General Assembly govern. (Read more here).


A wild incident began in New Haven Thursday with a shooting and ended in Bridgeport after a crash. The incident began when U.S. Marshals tried to serve a warrant to Marvin Owens, 54, who was wanted on 16 counts of violation of a protective order and other charges, Fox 61 reported.

As officers tried to serve the warrant in New Haven, Owens fled in a box truck onto Interstate 95 where he proceeded to drive to Bridgeport before his tires had blown out, and he crashed his vehicle and was taken into custody, Fox 61 reported. At some point during the incident, officers fired shots and no one was injured, Fox 61 reported. (Read more at Fox 61).


Donna Dvornek, 63, was injured when she was struck by a car in Bridgeport, and then she was struck a second time by a hit-and-run driver and later died as a result of her injuries, according to WFSB 3 TV. The driver later turned herself in and is facing charges, according to Channel 3. WFSB 3 TV notes that the driver of the first car that struck Dvornek stayed at the scene and tried to prevent other vehicles from driving through the area. (Read more at WFSB 3 TV).


A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in East Hartford Thursday night, according to Fox 61. The driver remained at the scene and police are investigating. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. (Read more at Fox 61).


U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-5, announced that she has tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time since the pandemic began. She announced that she has no symptoms, is fully vaccinated, which includes the booster shot, but will quarantine.


Norwich Schools Superintendent Norwich Kristen Stringfellow announced on Twitter that "NPS is closed (Friday) due to significant staffing shortages. It would not be safe to hold school. I am truly sorry for the inconvenience this decision will create for child care coverage but safety is our ultimate priority."


A good news update. Late Thursday, Westport Police announced that they were searching for a 22-year-old woman who went missing after launching a canoe into the Saugatuck River. Police searched the water and announced at 1:13 a.m. Friday that the woman has been located and is safe.


WTNH News 8 reports that the most searched grocery item in CT due to supply chain issues is "chicken shortage." Apparently, hot Cheetos were the most searched item in California and Arizona. (See the full map here).
