A woman died from critical injuries suffered in a two-vehicle car crash late evening on Jan. 25, according to Des Moines police.

Nancy Jean Horton, 67, died Thursday, according to police. Horton had been driving a Cadillac Escalade with three others, who suffered minor injuries.

According to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department, a preliminary examination of evidence and witness statements has led police to believe that a Chrysler Pacifica involved in the crash was allegedly driving southbound on Fleur Drive at a high rate of speed.

At about 11:52 p.m. on Jan. 25, the Pacifica allegedly struck the rear of the Escalade that Horton was driving near the intersection of Fleur Drive and Payton Avenue, according to the release.

The Pacifica was on fire when first responders arrived on the scene. Police say the 24-year-old driver of the Pacifica was unconscious and had been pulled out of the vehicle by bystanders before first responders arrived.

He suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized. There were no other passengers in the Pacifica, according to the release.

The crash remains under investigation. This is the second traffic fatality in Des Moines this year, according to police.
