Woman killed in fatal pedestrian collision in Tucson

A woman was killed early Saturday morning after a fatal pedestrian collision in Tucson, according to police.

Around 5 a.m. on Saturday, Tucson police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of South Country Club Road and East Transcon Way for a reported collision involving a pedestrian, officials said.

Officers located the victim, 26-year-old Zuralys Castro, and attempted to perform life-saving measures. Tucson police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said detectives investigated the incident and learned Castro had been walking in the roadway when she was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The victim was not in a crosswalk and there was no street lighting in the area, according to Tucson police.

Police said the driver of the Trailblazer stopped immediately after the collision and cooperated with the investigation, and determined they were not impaired at the time of collision. The police department said they attribute mid-block crossing by the victim as the major contributing factor in the collision.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and no arrests or citations have been issued.
