Woman killed by Las Cruces Police officer on Burley Court

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

A 45-year-old woman was shot and killed by a Las Cruces Police Department officer Tuesday, in an incident that officials said is still being investigated.

According to a news release from the department, an officer on bicycle patrol near the 1300 block of Burley Court, for unknown reasons, initiated contact with a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer.

It was unclear from the information provided by the department if the woman, whose name was not released to the media, was a driver or passenger in the vehicle.

"At some point during the contact, the officer discharged at least one round that struck the woman," read the news release from the department.

The news release from the department indicated that "specific details" were still unclear but that the officer had sustained minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.

The incident is being investigated by the Incident Task Force and the officer was placed on leave which is a standard procedure for any officer involved in a shooting. Further information on the shooting is expected to be disclosed at a 4 p.m. Tuesday press conference scheduled by the Las Cruces Police Department.
