Woman killed, man booked into jail after head-on collision on Kansas highway

A man was jailed after a head-on collision that killed a woman Wednesday in northeast Kansas.

Ayinde Jriel James, 44, of Fort Worth, Texas, was booked into the Jackson County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving, a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.

The accident was reported around 10:51 a.m. along U.S. 75 about two miles north of Holton, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

James was heading north on U.S. 75 in a 2013 Dodge Avenger car. Melinda Wareham, 74, of Whiting, Kansas was southbound on U.S. 75, the crash log said.

James’ car “was travelling at excess speeds and began to pass numerous vehicles without sufficient clearance” from Wareham’s vehicle, according to the crash log. James struck Wareham head on, the report said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.

Both lanes of U.S. 75 where the crash happened were closed off and traffic was rerouted until 2:30 p.m.
