Woman killed in second fatal accident on Highway 109 in Davidson County this month

THOMASVILLE - There has been another fatal accident on N.C. Highway 109 in Davidson County, approximately five miles from another car crash that killed four people, including two children on Jan. 6.

According to representatives with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a 63-year-old woman died Monday after she turned into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Jan. 30, law enforcement responded to a report of an accident on N.C. Highway 109 at the intersection of Clarksbury Church Road.

Reports indicate a 1996 Ford passenger vehicle was traveling East on Clarksbury Church Road. The driver tried to turn left onto N.C. 109, failed to yield and traveled into the path of an oncoming Cheverolet pickup truck traveling south.

The driver of the Ford, identified as Nancy Carol Tate, 63, of Lexington, was taken Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, Joseph David Medlin, 25, of Denton was not injured, according to law enforcement.

Besides failure to yield to oncoming traffic, there were no other a contributing circumstance to the incident.

This is the second fatal accident, and fifth death on N.C. Highway 109 in Silver Valley in a month.

On Jan. 6, four people, including two children, died as a result of a head-on collision on N.C. Highway 109 near Cid Road, approximately 5 miles from Clarksbury Church Road.

Law enforcement stated Robyn L. Degennaro, 62, of Winston-Salem, was driving south when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound Chrysler passenger vehicle, then struck a northbound Chevrolet SUV.  The Chrysler went off the road to the right, overturned and caught fire.

The three occupants of the Chrysler – Brittany Carter, 38, Ayden Palmer, 12, and Lincoln Palmer, 7 – died at the scene of the wreck.

Degennaro died as a result of her injuries a week later. The N.C. Highway Patrol stated she was impaired and driving at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident.

It is also the fifth fatal automobile accident in Davidson County in January.

On Jan. 11, a 72-year-old man, identified as Larry Sipes of Lexington, died after his vehicle was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle on Jersey Church Road near Hugh Miller Road in Southmont.  The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Lorene Kennel, 68, of Lexington sustained serious injuries and has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and traveling left of center.

On Jan. 16, Rebecca Reagan, 25, of Lexington was killed when she went left of center on N.C. Highway 150 near Crews Lake Road in Reeds and collided head-on with a Chevrolet SUV traveling in the opposite direction.

On Jan. 25 Alexandria Dawn Espinoza, 30, of Lexington, was killed on N.C. Highway 8 north of High Meadows Drive after hydroplaning and travelling left of center striking an oncoming Dodge pickup truck. Law enforcement said contributing factors were unsafe tires on the Chrysler and that Espinoza was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
