Woman killed in single-vehicle crash near Vass

Feb. 1—ABERDEEN — A West End woman was killed Tuesday when her vehicle ran off N.C. 690 and crashed into a tree, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened at 6:04 p.m. about five miles west of Vass, near the Morrison Bridge and Lakebay roads, according to a preliminary report filed by Trooper C.E. Stuart.

Christina Rose Parton, 36, of Timber Drive, who was driving a silver 2013 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, ran off the right side of the highway and collided with a tree and came to rest, the report said.

Parton, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not wearing a seat belt, according to Stuart, who noted that alcohol ad speed appeared to be contributing factors.

A dog riding in the back seat of the truck was injured, according to a post on Crains Creek Fire Department's Facebook page. A friend took the dog to an emergency veterinarian where X-rays revealed that the canine had a dislocated elbow, which was reset overnight, the post said. The dog will be OK.
