Woman killed in South Land Park hit-and-run crash. Sacramento police seeking suspect

Sacramento police on Wednesday were searching for a sport utility vehicle that fatally struck a woman riding a bicycle Tuesday evening in the South Land Park neighborhood.

The deadly hit-and-run was initially reported shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday as a traffic collision involving a vehicle that struck a pedestrian in the area of Freeport Boulevard and Potrero Way.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the woman who had suffered “significant injuries,” the Sacramento Police Department announced Wednesday evening in a news release.

The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release her name after her family has been notified.

Witnesses told officers at the scene the victim was riding a bicycle when she was struck by what investigators believe is 2004 GMC Envoy SUV.

The Police Department released a photo of the silver GMC Envoy suspected of hitting the bicyclist. Police said the GMC Envoy left the scene Tuesday before officers arrived.

The department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit and crime scene investigators conducted a thorough canvass of the area for evidence and witnesses.

Officers closed Freeport Boulevard between Irvin Way and Wentworth Avenue to investigate the crash. The roads were reopened late Tuesday.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the hit-and-run suspect vehicle or the incident to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
