Woman killed while changing flat tire on Route 8 in Thomaston

A woman died after she was hit by a car while changing a flat tire on Route 8 in Thomaston on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Connecticut State Police.

Karina Lopez, 24, of Torrington was driving in the left lane on Route 8 north near Exit 39 after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when she got a flat tire. Lopez got out of her car and attempted to fix the flat in the left lane when a 51-year-old Canton man driving a Subaru Outback hit her, state police said.

Lopez was transported to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar and later pronounced dead, state police said. The driver of the Subaru remained on the scene and was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with any information or dash cam footage is asked to contact Trooper Fitzgerald at Troop L at 860-626-7900.
