Woman leaves kids in car for so long that 3-year-old left to look for her, NC cops say

A 3-year-old went looking for a North Carolina woman after she left the child and two others in a car, police say.

Brianna Stewart, 23, went into the Cumberland County Courthouse in Fayetteville at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and left three children, ages, 1, 2 and 3, in a running car with the key in the ignition, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

She was gone for so long that the 3-year-old left the car, crossed a street with heavy traffic, and went into the courthouse looking for her, the Sheriff’s Office says.

Stewart had been in the courthouse for at least 20 minutes completing paperwork, the Sheriff’s Office says.

When deputies found the car in a parking lot, the other two children were still inside, and the 1-year-old had a wet diaper, the Sheriff’s Office says.

Only one of the three children had a car seat, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Stewart is charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts of child neglect, the Sheriff’s Office says.

She is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $3,000 unsecured bond, the Sheriff’s Office says.
