Woman loses leg after it gets stuck in moving walkway at Bangkok airport

A Thai woman’s leg was amputated after it got caught in a travelator at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, Thailand.
What happened: The 57-year-old passenger, who was set to board a flight to southern Nakhon Si Thammarat province, was walking on a travelator in the South Corridor of Terminal 2 when a suitcase hit her, causing her to fall and get her foot trapped by the travelator at around 8:30 a.m. local time on Thursday.
In the incident, her left leg from above the knee had to be severed by an on-site medical team before she was rushed to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, where she was informed that they could not reattach her leg.
However, the woman has asked to be transferred to Bumrungrad International Hospital, where doctors reportedly said that her leg can be reattached.

Investigation: The airport has temporarily shut down its travelators for investigation.
According to the airport's director Karun Thanakunjeeraphat, the travelator, which was manufactured by the Japanese company Hitachi, had been operating since 1996 and has not been updated.

In a press conference, Thanakunjeeraphat noted that the airport already has plans to replace the travelators by 2025 but may now speed up the replacement process.
Airport’s apology: Thanakuljeerapat has since visited the victim and promised to cover all of her medical costs plus additional compensation.
“On behalf of the Don Mueang International Airport, I’d like to express my deepest condolences regarding the accident,” Thanakuljeerapat said. “I’d like to insist that we will ensure that no such accident will happen again.”
