Woman’s lunchtime routine leads to big Maryland lottery win. ‘Didn’t know what to do’

A 62-year-old Maryland woman doesn’t always eat out for lunch on workdays, but when she does she always does one thing.

“I stop somewhere and get a lottery ticket,” the Prince George’s County woman told lottery officials, according to a Maryland Lottery Aug. 15 news release.

These side trips, the federal government contractor told lottery officials, help make her day at the office go by just a bit quicker, as she fantasizes about what it might be like to win big.

After a recent lunchtime stop, the woman’s fantasy turned into reality, lottery officials said.

“I picked Big Money randomly and really had few expectations, just hoping to win my money back,” the woman said of the ticket she bought at a Lanham liquor store.

The woman scratched her ticket after dinner, as she always does, according to lottery officials.

This time, however, her $5 scratch-off turned out to be an “after-dinner stunner” with a $50,000 prize, the top prize for the game, lottery officials said.

“I didn’t know what to do at first. I had to remind myself to take a breath,” the woman said of learning about her big win.

Lanham is about 30 miles southwest of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
