Woman revived, firefighter transported after fire destroys Adams Co. house

A resident and a firefighter were rushed to the hospital after a weekend fire in Adams County, officials said.

Crews were called to a reported house fire on the 100 block of Kime Avenue in Bendersville around 4:04 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, according to Adams County 911 dispatch records.

Bendersville Fire Chief Jeff Kime arrived on the scene to find a female patient in cardiac arrest outside the home, and fire showing from the front and rear of the home, he said in an interview Monday.

Kime directed police to begin CPR while he took command, and along with help from arriving fire crews, the patient was revived, Kime said. The victim was transported to Gettysburg Hospital, and then was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore, a burn center, he said. It was unclear of the patient's condition on Monday.

The victim's son, who was in the garage of the home when the fire broke out, came outside and found her unconscious on the back deck, Kime said. He pulled her away from the home, where firefighters found her on their arrival.

The first arriving engine company had a quick knockdown of the fire, Kime said, praising the first arriving crews.

"Everybody came and did their assignment," Kime said.

During the incident, a firefighter fell ill and was transported to Gettysburg Hospital for evaluation, Kime said. That firefighter was transferred to Hershey Hospital, but was discharged Sunday night, he said.
