An elderly woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being involved in a crash with Prince William and Kate Middleton's police convoy earlier this week.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were travelling from central London to Windsor on Monday for a service commemorating the Order of the Garter when the accident happened in Richmond. The 83-year-old woman, who the BBC reports is named Irene, collided with a marked police motorbike travelling in the convoy, and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. She is now thought to be stabilised.

Kensington Palace released a statement saying that William and Kate are "deeply concerned and saddened" about what happened, and have made contact with Irene. A member of staff from the Palace is thought to have visited the woman in hospital.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, as is "in line with procedure".

A spokesperson for the IOPC said in a statement: "Our staff attended the scene of the incident and after careful consideration, we have launched an independent investigation.

"The investigation is in its very early stages and the officer involved is assisting our enquiries as a witness. Our immediate thoughts are with the injured woman and her family and those affected by the incident."

Monday's crash isn't the only road traffic accident the royal family have been caught up in this year; in January, 98-year-old Prince Phillip was involved in a car crash while driving his Land Rover near the royals' Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

And earlier this month, the 83-year-old Duke of Kent was caught up in a car crash when his Jaguar collided with a student's Mini on an A road. A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said following the incident: "A royal household vehicle was involved indirectly in a collision on June 2 in Sussex. All the relevant details have been passed to the police."
