Ashley Barrett, 29, was identified as the victim killed in the crash, Sheriff Randy Retter said in a press release issued Friday.

Barrett’s 5-year-old son suffered minor injuries and was kept warm in a passerby’s vehicle until first responders arrived, Retter added. The child was taken to Reid Health Hospital for treatment and was reunited with his father.

“The initial investigation revealed that Ms. Barrett was east bound on Boyd Road travelling at a high rate of speed. Her vehicle ran off the south side of Boyd Road then swerved back onto the roadway. Ms. Barrett appeared to overcorrect again causing her vehicle to go off the south side of Boyd Road where her vehicle began to roll before striking a large tree,” Retter stated.

“It is believed that speed and alcohol played a factor in the crash,” Retter continued.

Officers closed Boyd Road for about three hours until the preliminary investigation completed and the vehicle removed.
