Woman surprises her mother-in-law with the ‘ofrenda’ of her mom in emotional TikTok

A mom was surprised with an emotional Day of the Dead gift from her daughter-in-law, and the footage is bringing TikTok to tears.

The gift, a commemorative offering called an ofrenda, is an essential part of the Day of the Dead — or Dia de los Muertos — which is traditionally observed on Nov. 1 and 2 (although other days such as Oct. 31 or Nov. 6 may be included).

To honor her husband’s late grandmother, TikToker @klaudiia_liciious made a very special ofrenda — and her mother-in-law’s emotional reaction has since amassed over 1.5 million views and 414,000 likes.

According to Inside Mexico, ofrendas are set up by family members to honor the memory of their ancestors. Pictures of the deceased are placed on the ofrenda, along with some of their favorite belongings.

Special food is also included in the ofrenda, such as mole, tamales, arroz rojo and fruits. Pan de muerto is also set out. In @klaudiia_liciious‘s ofrenda, set within a shadow box frame, she chose to represent those foods using plastic miniatures that she found at a Mexican marketplace.

Once the ofrenda is set up, a candle is lit in honor of each ancestor — serving as a light to guide their way back on Dia de los Muertos. According to the official Day of the Dead website, this holiday reunites the living and the dead and is marked by a spirit of celebration and cheer.

“Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. It is unlike any holiday where mourning is exchanged for celebration,” the website states.

Other essential Dia de los Muertos traditions include smiling calaveras, or sugar skulls, and flor de muerto, or Mexican marigolds.

While Dia de los Muertos is often mistaken as a “Mexican Halloween” — likely because of the similar timing and an overlap in afterlife beliefs — the two holidays are completely different.
