Women’s hockey: Gophers bow to No. 5 Yale 4-3

HENDERSON, Nev. — The Gophers women’s hockey team fell to 1-2-0 in nonconference play this season after a 4-3 loss to unbeaten Yale on Saturday night at The Dollar Loan Center.

No. 3 Minnesota fell to 10-3-2, while No. 5 Yale improved to 8-0-0. Saturday’s game was the first time Yale has beat the Gophers in 10 meetings all time.

Yale opened the scoring 1:38 into the game, the fourth time in the past five outings that Minnesota has been scored on first. The Gophers responded with two quick goals from Peyton Hemp and Ella Huber to give the U its only lead of the game. The Bulldogs responded with three unanswered goals to close out the first period with a 4-2 lead.

Huber added her second goal of the game just over four minutes into the second period, but Minnesota did not score again.

Sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter was relieved after allowing four goals in the first period. Senior Makayla Pahl stopped all eight shots in relief. Yale’s Pia Dukaric made 29 saves.

“A tough result tonight,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “We tied it up 2-2 in the first and they pulled ahead with two quick ones in the last minute of the first period. I thought we played really well in the second and third period. We limited Yale to eight shots through the last two periods. In the end, we just couldn’t find the equalizer.”

In Friday’s semifinals of the Henderson Collegiate Hockey Showcase, the Gophers beat Penn State 5-1, and Yale topped Boston University 2-0. In Saturday’s third-place game, Penn State shut out Boston University 3-0.

The Gophers head back to Minnesota for a home-and-home series with the Minnesota State Mankato on Dec. 2-3. Friday’s game will take place at 6 p.m. at Ridder Arena. The puck drop for Saturday’s game is 2 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
