Meet Tunisia's female DJs

Location: Tunis, Tunisia

SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PROFESSIONAL DJ AND TEACHER AT DJ ACADEMY FOR GIRLS, HAIFA BAZDEYA, SAYING:

"One time I will never forget it, after I did a set there was someone who stopped me and told me, "For a girl you are a very good DJ." He said when he sees a girl on stage he expects less, but he said for a girl, I surprised him. This made me really sad because as a woman I'm expected to perform less than a man who was in the same line-up and whom I should be regarded as an equal."

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) STUDENT AT THE DJ ACADEMY FOR GIRLS, KHAWLA BARNAD, SAYING:

"When I decided to become a DJ, and to study here in this academy, I faced difficulties. There are people who do not understand me, with some saying, 'What is this thing you want to do?" But we also can't forget the good people who always encourage you, and tell you to keep going because we don't have a large number of women DJs, we only know of males DJs. So, yes, some people encourage me to continue pursuing my dreams."
