Women were influential parts of the story of God

Recently in America, we celebrated a day uniquely designed to commemorate the role of mothers in society.

Historically women have been integral in advancing civilization culturally, economically, and academically, as well as in many other areas of pursuit. From the very beginning women have been critical in the formation of Christian theological history both in the Old and New testaments. When reading the Scriptures, we witness the profound impact women have made on the biblical foundation of the church.

The Old Testament provides numerous examples of the strength and faith of women. First, we find the courageous story of Esther, who, to her peril, embraced her conviction to save her people despite her potential destruction (Esther 4:14). He unwavering faith in God shows her strong belief in God’s sovereignty and power.

Deborah, the prophetess, and judge of Israel, used her exceptional wisdom and leadership to guide Israel through a time of adversity that would end in victory. She was a spiritual and military leader, most notably the leader God called out to serve his purposes at just the right time.

New Testament women show remarkable strength

The New Testament also provides many examples of remarkable women who had pivotal roles in advancing the gospel. For example, Mary, the mother of Jesus, shares her song at the beginning of Luke’s gospel (1:38) proclaiming her faith in God regardless of what others may think of her reputation. Her obedience and acceptance of God’s will for her place in the divine narrative show how women have shaped salvation history.

Mary Magdalene a devoted follower of Jesus (Matt 28:1-10), witnessed the crucifixion and was the first to witness the resurrected Lord. This puts her first in a lineage of disciples who would proclaim the gospel message.

The New Testament continues throughout the church, highlighting Phoebe (Rom 16:1-2), a deaconess serving faithfully the church of Rome. Priscilla often mentioned alongside her husband Aquilla, exemplified the partnership that is necessary for discipleship and encouraging the elders like Apollos in the early church (Acts 18:26).

Lydia, a prominent businesswoman, demonstrated hospitality in housing the early church in her home (Acts 16:14-15). The women and many others used their unique gifts to grow the flourishing early church.

Biblical record is strong foundation to celebrate contribution of women today

The rich tapestry of the contribution of women in the biblical record provides a strong foundation for celebrating the contribution of women today. While societal attitudes have imposed limitations in the past, it is crucial for the church to continue to recognize God's gift to all people.

I, as well as many of the readers of this essay, can quickly reflect on how influential women in our lives have shaped us. My life has been richer for having known so many powerful, thoughtful, and empathetic women who have modeled godliness and integrity.

By celebrating the achievements of women in the Old and New Testaments, we move forward as a church that celebrates the gifts of grace and wisdom that God has gifted to all of its members.

Let us stand united, embracing the invaluable role of women as an integral part of the body of Christ, both then and now.
