Women’s World Cup: 2 players from metro Atlanta looking to help USWNT three-peat

Fans of the United States Women’s National Team in Georgia will notice a couple of familiar faces competing for the red, white and blue at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Kelley O’Hara from Fayette County and Emily Sonnett from Cobb County both made the USWNT roster for this year’s tournament in New Zealand. It will be the fourth Women’s World Cup for O’Hara and the second for Sonnett.

O’Hara grew up playing club soccer in Fayette County and was a star player for Starr’s Mill High School. As the team captain, O’Hara led the Panthers to a state championship in 2006.

Emily Sonnett, meanwhile, lived in Marietta and attended Fellowship Christian School in Roswell. She also won a state championship her senior year.

The USWNT is looking to become the first team to win three Women’s World Cups in a row. The Yanks won in 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019 and they are the heavy favorites in this year’s tournament.

The USWNT will face off against Vietnam, the Netherlands and Portugal in the group stage on July 21, July 26 and August 1.

There aren’t just local connections on the United States team. Former Buford High School standout Elexa Bahr will play for the Colombian Women’s National Team. Bahr was a four-year letter winner for the Wolves in soccer and also lettered track.

Colombia will play South Korea on July 24, Germany on July 30 and Morocco on August 3.
