Women's basketball notebook: No. 2 Southeastern wins 20th game of year

Southeastern hasn't lost a game since late November.

The Fire's 55-51 victory over Ava Maria was their 14th victory in a row and gave the Fire their 20th win of the year.

Senior small forward Leilah Vigil led the way with 14 points and 11 boards. Graduate center Angela Perry chipped in with 12 points.

"Always good to get road wins," Southeastern head basketball coach Tim Hays said. "We looked a bit rusty and we are working on establishing some new players into the rotation, which may take a few games to look good. But overall, we will never complain about getting the W."

Now the No. 2 NAIA women's basketball team in the nation, Southeastern also won 74-55 over St. Thomas University on Jan. 8 at home, dominated Keiser University 85-68 Jan. 15 at home, and blew out Florida Memorial University 95-71 Jan. 18 on the road.

Catching up with Webber, Florida Southern, Warner

Webber International is on a seven-game winning streak thanks to its most recent 90-72 win over Ave Maria University Jan. 22 at home. Graduate guard Eletra Graham came off the bench and scored 22 points, which is the second time all year she has scored at least 20.

The Warriors also won, 76-47, over Thomas University Jan. 8 on the road, handled Florida Memorial, 78-64, on Jan.13 on the road, snuck by St. Thomas, 70-67, on Jan. 15 at home and beat Warner, 72-61, Jan. 20 on the road.

Florida Southern won four of its last six games. The Moccasins recently won, 75-59, over Barry on Jan. 22 at home. Graduate guard Julia Jenike scored a season-high 31 points in the contest.

The Moccasins also won, 63-44, over Embry-Riddle on Jan. 5 on the road, squeaked by No. 20 Eckerd, 56-55, on Jan. 8 on the road, lost to Saint Leo, 70-66, on Jan. 12 at home, came up with a win, 78-69, over Nova Southeastern on Jan. 15 at home, and fell short, 70-65, to No. 16 Tampa Jan. 19 on the road.

For Warner, the Royals came up victorious three out of the last five contests, which includes the team's most recent, 74-28, shellacking over Trinity Baptist on Jan. 22 at the Turner Athletic Center. Freshman forward Jasmine Edwards put up a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Warner also won, 71-64, over Thomas on Jan. 6 at home, beat Coastal Georgia, 71-64, on Jan. 8 on the road, and fell short to Ave Maria, 62-56, on Jan. 15 on the road.

Upcoming games

Southeastern (20-1) will take on Thomas (1-14) 5:30 p.m., Thursday at The Furnace. Webber (16-4) will next play Keiser (15-7) 5:30 p.m., Feb. 3 at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Florida Southern (9-8) will gear up for Florida Tech (2-14) 5:30 p.m., Wednesday in Lakeland. And Warner (8-9) will prepare for St. Thomas (8-11) 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Turner Athletic Center.
