The Women's Center Tackles Mental Health During Pandemic

VIENNA, VA — While public health guidelines related to the coronavirus pandemic has become widespread over the months, another aspect of health can't be neglected. The Women's Center, a Vienna and DC-based nonprofit, provides mental health counseling, support, and education in the DC metropolitan area and continues to tackle the challenge during the pandemic.

Over the spring, the Women's Center was quick to adapt services to a virtual platform to continue offering counseling to clients on a sliding scale. The Women's Center is now open with safety precautions while continuing group sessions remotely. Virtual counseling continues to be strongly encouraged although some therapists may offer in-person counseling sessions. The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program is happening through virtual appointments, but in cases where it is not safe, arrangements can be made for in-person visits.

According to Mental Health America, uncertainty and fear surrounding the pandemic are leading to a spike in depression and anxiety, particularly among essential workers, caregivers, and children.

Amidst a rising need for mental health care, the Women's Center is calling for community support and sharing tips to address the mental health toll of the pandemic.

Here's what the nonprofit shared:

Caring for yourself: As the old saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritize exercise, sleep, and eating well because your physical and mental health are closely related. Carve out a little time to do an activity that restores you whether that’s gardening, reading, or simply watching your favorite show.

Caring for your loved ones: Everyone is dealing with the trials of this year in different ways. Hold space for your loved ones to express their thoughts without judgment. Validate their emotions and ask the simple question, “What can I do to support you?”

Caring for your community: The human resiliency that comes after a wide-scale crisis is created when people come together. While we cannot physically come together, The Women’s Center is hosting a virtual Fall Benefit on Oct. 17 as an opportunity for us to gather. Enjoy a family-friendly evening of entertainment while supporting affordable mental healthcare in your community. Learn more at tinyurl.com/twcbenefit.
