Women’s Interfaith Spiritual Heritage (WISH) will hold a collective conversation on how women today can use their power to impact voting. Sojourner Truth had the confidence and courage to speak publicly about her convictions regarding women’s rights as citizens. Putting truth to power, she spoke of all women’s rights and roles in the voting process.

The Power of Women and the Vote will take place on July 31, from 3-5 pm at Alpha Phi Alpha Founders Hall, 662 Wolf Ledges Pkwy in Akron. The public is invited to register for this free program at https://tinyurl.com/WomenVotePower. On-site registration will begin at 2:45 pm.

Featured speakers include state Rep. Emilia Sykes, candidate for Congress, and former minority leader for the Ohio House of Representatives. Rep. Sykes will discuss the status of redistricting and voter rights. Towanda Mullins, chair, Sojourner Truth Project-Akron, will reveal the role that black women like Sojourner Truth have played in enlarging all women’s voting rights. Pastor Joy Fenton-Jones, First Christian Church in Cuyahoga Falls, will talk about mobilizing the faith community around the knowledge of voter suppression and advocating voting rights.

These brief presentations will be followed by structured conversations about women and the power/impact of their vote.

Program supporters include the Akron Area Interfaith Council, Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation of Akron, Dominican Sisters of Peace, Our Lady of the Elms, First Congregational Church of Akron, League of Women Voters of Akron, and Project Ujima.
