Women's Rights rally held in Alamogordo

On May 14, local women's rights organization We Trust Women held a protest in response to the recently leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade if approved.

"We are here to support abortion justice and reproductive rights for women everywhere especially in low-income communities, women of color, undocumented citizens," We Trust Women rally organizer Natalie Wilkins said. "Because they already have restricted access to those things and with the overturn of Roe v. Wade, it's going to make it 10 times more difficult for them."

The protest had participants of all genders both young and old in attendance.

The protest comes after the May 2 leak of a draft Supreme Court decision stating the U.S. Supreme Court's intention to overturn its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

"I am so glad that this event had such a great turnout," Wilkins said in a statement Monday, May 16. "It warms my heart that in the town of Alamogordo, the feedback we received was insanely positive. As a survivor of assault, a mom, a daughter and sister, this event has provided a glimmer of hope, and we will be back. Solidarity will not stop here. This is about so much more than abortion."

One of the protesters was Kim Gugliotta who protested for women's rights in the 1960s.

"This affects everyone's rights from children to old people, male, female, in-between, this affects you," Gugliotta said. "The bottom line too... is that it affects people's lives and quality of life and the child's quality of life."
